Utilizing Journals

What are they?

No, don’t worry, we don’t have people’s diaries on display in the library…so what are they? A journal is a collection of articles published by a particular reliable academic source by a specific magazine or group that addresses particular topics.

So for example, when searching for an article published in the TIME magazine several years ago, the way to find that would be to go to the TIME Journals, which are the bound TIME magazines all set in one location for you to use!  If you’re interested in the hard copy, you will find all the journals alphabetically organized on the first floor of the Masland library. Not only can you access them in hard copy at the Library, but some journals are also found online.

One way to access the electronic journal is through the databases. If you’ve searched for an article and find that the source is from TIME magazine but don’t like this article you found, you can easily look at other articles that TIME magazine has published.

In this sample picture of an article, you can see the Title, Author, and Source. Clicking on the Blue “TIME” by the Source, the database will take you straight to a page where you can access the journal articles from those in the early 90s up to the most recent ones.

Then select your year, your issue, and scroll through the articles in this particular journal. Or if you’re interested in searching within the entirety of TIME magazine, click “Search within this publication” and find if there are any articles relating to your topic in TIME magazine.

It’s as easy as that! Start with the database; find your magazine, access your journal, search or browse within your publication and viola! You will have found the sources you need in no time. So next time you write a paper, remember that the first floor Journals may have more to help than you think!

Let’s be honest, sometimes the weekends seem a bit dead around here with many people heading home to be with family. It’s fun to go out with friends and try to do eventful things on the weekends, but typically that requires money, which many of us don’t have much of. Therefore, a great thing to fall back on is just hanging out with some friends and watching a movie.

Finding someone who has Netflix or a good selection of movies in their room can be difficult at times, but did you know that the library has movies? You can ask to look at them behind the front desk, or better yet, you can actually look up the whole list online! You can find this list by typing in “feature films” in the search bar at library.cairn.edu.

The list under featured films is most, but not all, of our movies; to find the complete list you can also go to library.cairn.edu/search/e and type in “PN 1997.2 or PN 1997.3”. You can browse through them, see what looks interesting, and the best part is that you don’t have to worry about driving anywhere. Although we may not have the widest selection to choose from there are several good movies. Cast Away, Enchanted, Star Wars Episodes 4-6, and Stranger Than Fiction are just a few of the movies that we have to offer.

Just remember, if you were hoping to watch a movie on Friday or Saturday night try and plan ahead a little because we close at 7pm on Friday and 6pm on Saturday. Have a great weekend!

Preparing for Breaks

It’s that time of the semester, SPRING BREAK and soon to be Easter weekend!!

Many of us have planned to go on trips, sleep, spend time with family and friends, or maybe even get a project done. As exciting as our plans may be, we must remember the most important thing over break, to actually give ourselves a break. Often times we go home and actually exhaust ourselves from too much fun, and extra late nights. We must remember that this break is only a little over a week and then the games begin again. Let’s do ourselves a favor and take advantage of the sleep we deserve, but remember that this is also the chance to revive spiritually. As students we tend to put our assignments before our devotions, but praise God for giving us these days of oasis.

For those who have planned to get ahead on some assignments, and may need a book over break, but it can’t be checked out, do not be dismayed. The library has a very helpful tool that may make things a bit easier, the copier. Yes, the copier not only prints out pages for you, but you can also scan pages from a book and email them to yourself. This helps save money and prints on your card. Feel free to come to the library and ask a librarian or student worker to show you how the wonders are done. Enjoy your break, and let it be glorifying to the Lord, full of rest, sleep, and joy.

Do you whisper?

How many of you watched the Super Bowl this year? Great! Now, how many of you watched the Super Bowl just for the advertisements? Yup, same here. Out of all of the commercials, my favorite would have to be the Oreo Cookie or Cream library fight because no matter what happened during the fight everyone whispered.

Whispering in the library is well known as library etiquette but did you know that there are other rules that go along with library etiquette? Rules such as “Don’t knock the library shelves over” and “Don’t try to climb the architecture in the library” but the biggest one of all is “No food or open drink in the library.” I know all of us at a time or two were thinking “Well I am only going to talk to my friend for a minute so I really don’t have to whisper” or “I am so hungry and I have this twenty page paper to write for my class in a half hour, it won’t be a big deal if I bring my turkey dinner into the library.” Okay so maybe that was a bit of an exaggeration but in all seriousness the library is a place of quiet study.

This semester the library is starting a new campaign and we want YOU to help promote it! It is called the “Shush” campaign and basically we are asking that students help keep the noise level in the library low. Many people come to use the library as a quiet place to study for midterms, write copious amounts of papers, and even sometimes read. If the people in the Oreo commercial can have an all out war and still be quiet I think we at the library can do the same! So just remember keep the noise to a dull roar (or even a little less) and eat your *Oreo’s before you enter. The last question that remains is: Cookie or Cream?

*No Oreo’s were harmed in the making of this blog

Global Missions Week.

Revelation 7:9-10
After these things I looked, and behold, a great multitude which no one could count, from every nation and all tribes and peoples and tongues, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed in white robes, and palm branches were in their hands; and they cry out with a loud voice, saying,  “Salvation to our God who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb.”

While listening to Dr. Joshua Bogunjoko speak in Chapel yesterday, I was marveling at the expanse of the Global church and rejoicing at the thought of worshipping with believers from around the world before the throne of God.  Global Missions Week is one of my favorite weeks.  I love hearing what God is doing around the world both through the speaker and the missions representatives.  God has been teaching me recently the importance of missions, but not missions in the traditional sense (going overseas to serve Him).  Rather, He has been showing me how much of a mission field is right around us, here in Langhorne and in any community.  He has also been showing me the power of prayer, and one of my favorite books relating prayer to the global community is Operation World (located both in the reference section: BV2050 .M35 2010 and on the main floor BV2050 .J63 2001 and BV4811 .J596 1993 – these three call numbers are three different editions).  Operation World presents a brief synopsis of a country and then provides prayer concerns for that country.  Looking through the different editions from 1993 to 2010, it is amazing to see how God has answered prayers over the years.  I challenge you to come and look at Operation World or the other books about missions that we have on display in the library lobby.  What mission field is God calling you to?

Knick-Knacks of the Library

Students come to the library all the time, to work on projects, do some leisure reading, or use the computers. But there are various availabilities that the students don't realize this library has! Our wonderful library has headphones you can rent out! You get them at the front desk, scanning your card for them just like a reserve book. And like a reserve book, you can have them out for two hours! So if you don't have your own headphones, no problem! The library is here to meet your needs.
Something else the library offers is DVDs! If you're looking for an interesting movie to watch over the weekend because your hard work has left you with little homework to do, just check out the library! Star Wars, Pride & Prejudice, The Matrix, and more! Leisurely DVDs as well as scholarly DVDs are available for your viewing. You check them out with your card and can keep them for three days. Now if you don't have anything to do on the wintery weekends, you can check out a movie from the library and settle on your couch with a hot drink to enjoy some well-earned relaxation!

One more amenity the library provides is study rooms! You can check out the key to a private study room in the 'quiet zone' (an actual room with a door you can close), by going to the front desk and scanning out a key. You can use these study rooms for two hours at a time. Just remember to lock the door when you leave and bring the key back to the front desk.
Another luxury, aside from the countless books, several computers and tables available, would be the cushioned loveseat and chairs upstairs in the middle walkway connecting the two aisles of books. If you get tired of having to sit in the normal hard-backed chairs, you can go lounge on the cushioned couches and enjoy your reading in a more relaxed manner.

I hope this little overview has helped you to understand more of what your library can have to offer! Just please remember, whenever you are in the library, it is always a good idea to keep your bag/purse/laptop with you at all times! And as much as a snack might sound good while you're studying for hours, please don't bring food into the library. Food brings bugs, and we don't want you to have to worry about bugs when you're trying to study!
