Finals Week

It has come upon us once again. That time of the year where students pull all-nighters with their noses stuffed into books and coffee in their hands. We all know the stress of finals week, so the library is offering some good news to hard-core study students! The library will be open an extra hour than later, making closing time midnight instead of 11! We also advise you to make use of the study rooms that can be checked out at the front desk, if having people going by will get you distracted. The study rooms help you to focus on your studies and not get distracted by friends who walk by.

And if you need time to de-stress, you can check out a movie to help relax! With May 4th having just passed us, a personal recommendation is one of the Star Wars movies. The movies will come up on a search in the library catalog, and can be checked out at the front desk. And for those of you who listen to music while you study, the library has headphones to check out at the front desk as well!

Hope all of our commodities help with this last week of craziness. Good studying!

Murder and Mayhem

On Friday, September 7 the Library will be holding a Murder Mystery.  We invite all Cairn Students to join us as we work to discover who killed Dr. Ima Gonner.  There will be food, a costume contest and a chance to have a lot of fun with your friends.

The Story

Set in the 1940's the World is at War.  But in the midst of a country manor a different drama is playing out.  Professor Digory Kirke (The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe) has invited many of the notable names of the era to the party to listen to Dr. Gonner's findings. Dr. Ima Gonner has discovered through her research that much of the literature is not what it seems.  Will she live to tell the tale?

Meanwhile Father Brown, G.K. Chesterton's famed character, will be on hand to handle any unexpected events of the evening. Please join us for a night of intrigue.  The doors open at 8:00 pm.  Be sure to sign up for teams prior to the event in the library.  Or you can be added to teams still looking for additional players.

8:00         The doors open 80 players can be admitted.
8:00-8:30 Food and Costume contest
8:30         The game begins....

Smile

This is my first semester working in the library as it is also my first semester here at Philadelphia Biblical University. As a new face it has been interesting watching people interact with each other in different situations such as in the cafeteria, classroom, or even just passing by in the halls or on the walkway. One of the things I find fascinating is how some people will always smile and say hi even if they don’t know you; while others avoid eye contact altogether… even if we have met once or twice.

As student workers in the library we are encouraged to smile and say hi to people as they walk in and out. It’s been neat to see how people react when you smile at them; it turns a stone face into a warm smile. I have really enjoyed this simple part of my job, just seeing the effect a simple smile has on people brightens my day. So as the semester moves on I would like to challenge each and every one of you to just smile whether it’s a good friend you have had for the past 3 years or if it’s at a new freshman that you will probably never even talk to. Just smile, it will brighten your day and theirs.
